Achievements of Macedonian sportists
Macedonian sportsmen and women have won a large number of medals and acknowledgments at official international and regional competitions. The most successful year was 1986, when 125 medal were won 68 gold, 27 silver and 30 bronze. A Macedonian alpinist expedition conquered Mont Everest in 1989.
Macedonian sporting representatives have also achieved significant results at many international competitions in volleyball, basketball, football and free style wrestling.
They took part in the Olympic Games at Barcelona in 1992, for first time independently under the flag of the International Olympic Committee. In postwar Olympic Games, there were nine medalists from Macedonia: they won 2 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals. The last gold medalist was Branimir Jovanovski who took part in the Barcelona Para Olympic Games in shooting. Besides the winners, there were many volleyball, football players, wrestlers, swimmers, kayakers and track athletes.
The achievements of Macedonian competitors at world and European championships in wrestling, boxing and karate are also noteworthy.
