Macedonia clubs, membership & capacities
There are about 2,500 registered sports organizations in the Republic of Macedonia (clubs, associations, societies and similar bodies). They include as active members about 250.000 citizens, which is 12% of the total population. Some 1.680 amateur and professional specialist personal take part in the activities of the sports organizations, so there is one specialist to registered 150 citizens actively engaged in sports.
Macedonia has 2.060 sports facilities with 2,2 square meters of playing area per citizen. Of the covered facilities, the most numerous are sports halls 287, about 80% of which are in schools. There has been a Faculty of Physical Culture in Skopje for more than 20 years now.
Macedonia has so far been host to two world championships. In 1976 the World Wide Kayak and Canoe Championship took place here, and in 1981 the World Free-Style Wrestling Championship was held in Skopje. In addition of these two championships, Skopje was the organizer if the 1972 Chess Olympiad.
